Today was very eventful. leaving the hotel at 7:00, we entered the park at sunrise. We went to the lamar valley today to find a wolf pack. Some wolf watchers passed us going the opposite way heading back to hells roaring in search of the eight mile pack. we continued to our initial destination, with nothing in sight we turned around and followed the wolf watchers. On the way to them we were side tracked with two magnificent big horn sheep right off the road. After the sheep we caught up with the wolf watchers setting up waiting for the 8 mile pack to show up, where we also had Doug McLaughlin speak to us about his time as his wolf studies. they never did come out, but a little down the road other wolf watchers spotted the Junction butte pack, We unloaded the scopes quickly to catch the wolves just cresting the mountain. it was an amazing sight.
we spotted hundreds of bison and elk in the lamar valley today. We went to an old wolf kill of a huge elk with drop tine antlers, and many other mammals sign. the most interesting mammal sign we seen was wolf’s number 09 old den. At the end of the day I finally was able to see a pika. we have yet to see a bear but I am quite optimistic about tomorrow that we will see one.
