We were off on the road at 7:00 this morning. Wolf watching was on the agenda in Lamar Valley to watch the Lamar Canyon Pack. We tried one spot and sort of saw wolves but we did see a bear high on a mountain in a clearing. Finally, we moved to join MacNeil Lyons and saw some wolf action Female 926 was out with her pack. They had made a kill of deer. After a while we moved up the valley more to see Rick McIntyre, who’s the wolf biologist. We saw even more action. We watched as the wolves would poke their heads out while eating their kill. Rick gave us a talk about telemetry and showed us how to work it. He then continued to tell us the story of how 926’s mate died this spring. She flirted with 4 strong males from the Prospect Pack and they joined her.
We ate lunch at Pebble Creek. Our guide Shauna taught about the growth stages of wolves. We then moved down the road to hike about 2 miles past the confluences of the Yellowstone and Lamar River. Here we reflected on our naturalist view down by the river. While I was down there I got to see a little dipper bird. He dived into the river eating aquatic insect larvae. We hiked out way out from there and headed home.
