This morning was a snowy one with quite a bit of snow on the ground when we left at 7:00 this morning. We were on the search for wildlife up in Lamar Valley, and on our way up there we ran into a mature bull elk only 5 yards off the side of the road. We saw quite a few herds of bison in the valleys and numerous elk herds way up on the horizon with our spotting scopes. For wolf watching we were striking out, but we did meet up with Doug McLaughlin and heard that the 8 mile pack were heading our way. We set up next to Doug and glassed the horizon to only see ungulates, then we heard ended up sighting three members of the Junction Butte pack as they crossed over the slope. Bighorn were next to the road to, and we got some nice pictures of them before we ate lunch.
After that we hiked up to a wolf kill of a bull elk that had double drop tines and I have never seen a elk have that much mass on his horns before. We also ran into a small bachelor group of bull bison while heading to the kill. After that we hiked to number 9’s first den site and found a lot of mammal sign along the way. We also found another elk skull to take pictures with and I think we even left Garrett a few times out in the woods. After listening to Aldo Leopold’s essay I found out that the park had some wild ass (Tanner Tougas) close to the road giving Gary a good chuckle before we headed back to the hotel.
