Today was a really fun day and was a very eventful day at that. The morning started with a cold sit at a rock pile looking for pika. Pika are a small animal that looks like a guinea pig but is in the rabbit family. They are a species that is very sensitive to climate change which made it more special to see since we found them in a very low elevation area. After we got done looking at the pika we drove over to where the Junction Butte wolf pack has been. Once we arrived to the area there was about 15 vehicles already there and 20 people with scopes out. once we set up the scopes we were instantly able to find 8 wolves eating on a big bison carcass that we assume was a bison that we saw yesterday with a broken leg.
After we left the wolf site we drove over to the confluence of the Lamar river and Yellowstone river. We started the hike by venturing off path and going straight uphill. We hiked a solid 5 miles and made our way all the way to the top of Junction Butte and were rewarded with a solid view. The climb up was a very rocky and rough climb that was very hard on the legs and calf muscles. Once we got back down from the hill we hiked back to the confluence where we had dinner. We finished the day off by listening to a speaker about climate change and then went to the boiling river and relaxed a little.
