Today, the boys of 302 awoke from sleepless night due to Tanner’s loud and uncontrollable snoring. We managed to walk down to the restaurant to consume french toast, eggs, sausage, and orange juice. The group jumped into the bus and as well pulled out of the hotel, Tour Guide Mike began to talk about the history of the wolves in Yellowstone. The bus traveled to the Lamar Valley and made several U turns trying to follow wolf enthusiast Doug McLaughlin. He got a tip that a pack of wolves was moving through a specific area which we quickly followed him to. Unfortunately, we did not see any wolves but Doug gave a nice talk about his life track and observing wolves in Yellowstone. Next we started traveling out of Lamar Valley when we saw several car park on the side of the road. We rapidly drove to that area and learned that the Junction Butte Pack was on the hill. A wonderfully nice lady let me use her expensive spotting scope where I finally got to observe wild wolves for the first time in my life. The wolf observation was short lived as they ran over the hill and out of sight. We then made our way to a secret spot Tour Guide Mike knew that contained a large elk skull with drop tines. We hiked our way to the bone sight were many people in the group posed for selfies for the Instagram. Then we left the area and went to an area that was a known pika sighting. Fortunately for us, we saw a few pika hiding in the rocks! Finally we made our way to a small creek where Tour Guide Mike read an essay by Aldo Leopold about Yellowstone. The essay was insightful and a great way to wrap up the last day with Tour Guide Mike.
