Blazing New Trails

Today we set out into the park at 6:15 a.m. in hopes of finding the wolves and grizzly bear from yesterday.  Even though we didn’t see any wolves or bears we saw numerous elk and bison.  The sunrise over the Lamar Valley was a beautiful sight to see.  Between stops Shauna told us stories about different animals in the park, along with some very funny stories about stupid tourists.  At one point today we almost took out a Pronghorn buck with the bus.  We stopped at a skree pile to look for Pika.  Pika are a small member of the rabbit family and they are absolutely adorable.  We watched the Pikas run over the rocks collecting grasses for winter for about an hour before heading to our next destination. We ate lunch at Soda Butte Creek before we went on our afternoon hike. We hiked roughly 4 miles round trip on the Baronette Trail.  Today was the first time Shauna had been on that trail in the summer/fall season.  The trail is usually only open in the winter for cross country skiing.  After our hike we went down to the boiling river for a much needed soak.  The water was much more enjoyable than it was last year as it was more of a constant, warm temperature.
