Day one started off very well on our Yellowstone trip. We woke up nice and early to get out into the northern part of the park. On our first stop we watched some bison come over the hills into sight, and we also watched some white tail deer evade a coyote along a creek in the valley below us. As we stood there with the sun rising in the east we heard some elk over a ridge bugling. After awhile we moved on. We drove through the Little America Valley into the Lamar Valley where we noticed a crowd of wolf watchers, so we stopped along side them. Up on the hill, about a mile away there were eight wolves from the Prospect Peak Pack. We got to look at them through our spotting scopes, and on a few occasions they howled. That was by far the highlight of my day.
Later on we hiked up the side of a hill, and went to the den site of the famous number 9 wolf. Our guide told us stories about the wolves in this area, and their history in the park. Later in the afternoon we went back into Gardiner and watched a presentation on the elk management in the park, and the bear population in the park. Later in the evening we met with a photographer named MacNeil Lyons about his experiences photographing the parks animals, and scenery.
