Today we started out hopeful for some wolf activity at a fresh kill, however we only ended up seeing two coyotes. Today the Junction pack was outside of the park and there was rain on and off all day. We spent a lot of time driving around looking for animals, however the wildlife viewing was a little slow. We saw the usual bison, elk, and pronghorn, as well as 3 mule deer and a few bald eagles.
While we watched the bison I learned that male bison’s horns are shaped “L” and females are more of a crescent moon shape. And that male bison’s heads grow continuously throughout their life.
After giving up on chasing wildlife it stopped raining and we went to the Lamar river to look for animal tracks and have lunch. There were many different kinds of tracks. We found bear, fox, wolf, coyote, otter, and elk tracks. There was also an old bison kill an the other side of the river.
After getting dropped off back at our hotel by the guides we headed back into the park. As we drove to Norris Geyser Basin it started to rain again. We walked around the Black Sand Basin looking at the different geysers and hot springs it started to downpour and then continued to rain moderately for the rest of the time we spent there.
And now, on to pizza.
