Today was a lot of fun, we actually got to go in the park and made a stop at Mammoth Hot Springs. At the first stop we got to hear a presentation about elk and bears. It only lasted an hour but it was very informative. After the presentation we were going to the hot springs to talk about geothermal activity, rock formations, trees, and the soil. Before we got to the edge of town by the springs we saw a decent bull elk. We watched him for a little while as we talked about elk biology and then moved on to the hot springs. We had a long informative talk about the formation of Mammoth Hot Springs and of the regions geography. After that we went to the Norris geyser basin where Alex took a pH sample, the water had a pH of 3. Once we finished up there, we were going to go to a cultural site for lunch, but missed the turn and got stuck in construction. When we finally got out of construction we stopped for lunch at an unknown location by a beautiful meadow surrounded by tall trees. We were also able to find some coyote, wolf, red squirrel, and bison sign for mammalogy class. When we finished with lunch and a little walk, we went to the canyon where we had an amazing view over the Yellowstone river. This was an insanely deep canyon carved out by the river in the last 8 to 10 thousand years. I would have never guessed that such a deep canyon could be carved so fast. When we finished on a trail, we hiked back to an overlook of the water fall. Here, I was trying to get a picture with some of the guys and an Asian man was also trying to get in with me, it was strange. Then he wanted a picture of me cause I have a beard, this was very strange but o-well. This was our last stop for the day and we went back. After supper we got a interesting presentation on climate change and a few interesting bear stories.
