We were pleasantly surprised to see a nice bull elk right before we entered the park. He was close to the road and was the biggest one we had seen up close so far on the trip! We pulled off the road and opened to door to watch. He gave us a good show, bugling and milling around for awhile. That was what I came to see! I was so excited!

We continued on into the park, looking for any wildlife we could see. We found wolves, the Prospect Peak pack again, and we moved from site to site to view them for a while. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to hear Rick MacIntyre tell us a couple stories, one was even about the Cinderella wolf.

We spent the late morning and early afternoon on a hike that was very rewarding. We found many kill sites, a huge bison skull, several elk skulls, elk sheds and other interesting things! We all stopped at each one and pointed out our observations! That’s what you get when you take a bunch of Fish & Wildlife kids to explore Yellowstone, I guess! On our hike we saw a couple coyotes feeding on a pronghorn carcass on a little gravel spot in the river. We were alerted to the by the ravens that kept hovering there.

Once our hike was over, we traveled back to Mammoth where we saw “Broken nose” the elk. We watched him for a few minutes and then a group of us got dropped of at the head of the Boiling River Trail. We hiked the trail to the entrance of the river and got into the river. It was both hot and cold, a unique experience that I’m sure none of us will forget. Each time a person moved up stream, it change the water around you. You were constantly moving from hot to cool water and back again. It was fun though and we enjoyed it!
