Kramer: Final Reflection

We have been back in North Dakota for a couple weeks now and the weather here is starting to feel like the weather we had while we were in Yellowstone, cold and windy. My favorite part of the trip was just to experience the altitude and seeing the mountains. This is the first time I had ever been in true mountains. The main reason I decided to sign up for the class was to get this opportunity. Seeing the bighorn sheep right next to the road was definitely a highlight of my trip. There is something different about seeing an animal in the wild compared to in a zoo. We got to see a pack of wolves, so I got to check that off of my bucket list. We also looked for some pika. We did not see any at the first spot we went to, but I enjoyed traversing through the rocky landscape, and if I would ever go back to Yellowstone, I would go back to this spot. We did see pika in the next spot we stopped and looked. If I were to go back to Yellowstone, I would definitely want to spend more time in Lamar Valley. I would also want to do more hiking. The hike through the old forest was one of my favorite parts of the trip. I also enjoyed time at the hotel. It was nice being in Gardiner because the restaurants and stores were just a short walk down the street. One thing I would want to do if I were to go back with the college is stop at one of the near by ranches and talk to a rancher about his opinions about the park. But overall, I really enjoyed the trip and encourage anyone who enjoys wildlife or ecology to take the class. I enjoyed the group that we went with and really appreciate all the work Dr. Ketterling put in for us to have this opportunity.
