Landon Hill Final Reflection

Overall this trip has been nothing short of amazing. When you get a good group of people together like we did, you know its going to be a good time. All throughout the trip we learned a ton and got to see many cool sites. Something we learned was that the bison population in Yellowstone were essentially saved by a poacher that was poaching all the bison, but was then caught and they were able to turn him into being on their side and use his personal experiences to catch poachers. Another was about the acclimation pens they wolves were brought into. The acclimation pens purpose was to get the wolves accustomed to their new environment so that they didn’t just get out of their cages and run back to their home area. Not only did we learn a lot, but we also got to witness a lot.

My favorite part of this whole trip was probably getting to see the Junction Butte pack chase around a herd of bison, they did’t kill any but it was still cool to watch. A close second of mine this trip was seeing the oh so elusive grizzly. I’ve never seen one in real life and to see one on this trip when we all doubted it so much was really cool. Another thing I really enjoyed was trying to spot the mountain goats up on Barronette Peak, we knew there was probably a couple up there and was quite the challenge to try and figure out where they were at.

Overall this trip was a lot of fun. Even thought that our trip got cut a day short because of the weather it was still a ton of fun. This is something I would highly recommend that someone does, because you’ll create memories that last a lifetime.

  • I’m glad you had a great trip. How many packs of wolves did you get to see? Or wolves in general? What was the most impactful lesson you learned while you were on this trip?

    • We were pretty sure that the only pack of wolves we saw was the Junction Butte pack. We saw 17 one day, and 2 another day. The most impactful lesson would probably be how important the wolves are in controlling the elk and bison populations.

This sounds like it was worth the trip for sure! How far would you say the entire group travelled in the Yellowstone area? What kind of equipment did you get to use while on the trip? Also, if you had to pick one site, which site would you recommend other people to visit or one that you would like to visit again? 🙂

    • Each day we were in the car for around 2-3 hours i’d say, not sure exactly how far we traveled. While we were there we often used binoculars and spotting scopes. If i was to go back to Yellowstone, I would go to Barronotte Peak because I really enjoyed spotting the mountain goats.

  • It sounds like it was a good time! I bet it was pretty cool seeing the pack of wolves chase a herd of bison around. How big is the pack of wolves you saw?
