Today started out with some breakfast at the hotel. It snowed quite a bit last night and was still snowing some when we left at 7. We went straight to the Lamar Valley with the intention to spot some wolves. We drove around a bit, but did not see any wolves, but we did see some large elk, and two big horn sheep right next to the road. Then we saw Doug McLaughlin and stopped. We looked for wolves for a while with him and then he gave us a talk about some wolf history stories and his personal favorite stories. He heard that there were wolves spotted slough creek so we headed over there. We arrived right in time. Some nice wolf watchers let me look through there scope and I saw 4 wolves trotting over the mountain. Then 3 more wolves appeared on the bottom of the scope. One wolf was limping like he just recently got hurt. I later found out that the wolf that was limping was the alpha male of the Junction Pack and was kicked by a bison calf. This is something that I will never forget. I can completely understand how wolf watchers dedicate their whole lives to this. From here, we went and saw a wolf kill. It was an elk that had double drop tines. Then we went and looked for pika again. We actually spotted a couple and got some great pictures. We headed back to Gardiner from here. I would have to say that today was a pretty good day in Yellowstone.
