Gunnar: Yellowstone Day 2

Today started an hour earlier than yesterday and the plan was to get to see the wolves early in the morning when it was just starting to get light outside. We were all set up at our viewing point at around 7:30 or so but there was one thing missing, the wolves. They never made an appearance this morning so we were not able to see any wolves today but we were able to track a badger back to his hole in the same area. Also, we were able to see 4 or 5 big horned sheep on the top of the peak behind us as we were scanning for the wolves, and a coyote just after we left the site.  After leaving our viewing platform we moved down the road to Barronette Mountain where one of the members was able to find a mountain goat perched up high on the side of the mountain.

After we finished with our nature viewing search we went on a couple separate hikes, one to find an old remain of an elk carcass and another one to check out the original wolf acclimation pens. The hike to the carcass was not a very long hike but it was through a beautiful canyon by a campground area. It was a great experience to be on but the second hike was way better than the first. The second hike was about a three mile hike round trip to the acclimation pens. It was an easy going hike because of the gradual change in elevation. The pen was smaller than I imagined since it was only one square acre in size and I pictured it being much larger since wolves need space to move around.
