Today was our first day in the park without our guides. The original plan was to go see the canyon and then go to Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful. Our drive started at 7 am and it was raining. As we got closer to the canyon it started to snow and then as we continued it got heavier and heavier. Eventually, Dr. Ketterling decided to pull off and the next spot and wait for the van that was supposed to be following us. They got to the spot and explained that their van was not doing well going up the hills in the snow. So, we all decided it was safer to head back to Mammoth and decide where to go after that. We got to Mammoth and decided to explore the shops and the museum for a bit. Dr. Ketterling talked to a park ranger at the museum and they told him there wasn’t any snow predicted for the roads to Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic. We put it to a poll and some people wanted to attempt the trip and others wanted to go back to the hotel. It was around 9 am when we split into our different vehicles. Dr. Abshire drove the small black van and took people that didn’t want to go, plus a couple others, back to the hotel and to get gas. Then the people from that van that wanted to go came back with her to meet us at Old Faithful. On the way down we didn’t see any more snow but when we were about to pass the sign for Firehole Falls we noticed a bunch of cars pulled off at the side of the road. There was a large black wolf feeding on a carcass only around 150 yards from the road. We hurried and parked up ahead and then walked back, while maintaining a safe distance from the wolf, to take pictures. We were watching the black wolf eat and then we saw a grey wolf come out of the trees to join in on the meal. We moved on after getting some good pictures and videos. We arrived at Old Faithful just in time to see it erupt and then we waited for our other van to arrive. We shopped around at the gift shops and waited for the next eruption because the people in the other van had missed the first one. After the second eruption, we drove to Grand Prismatic. I had hopped in the small black van with the other girls and we had gone to the basin. The larger van with the boys noticed that the sun had broken through the clouds and went to the overlook. When we were done at the basin we heard that they had gone to the overlook and decided to head to that so we could see Grand Prismatic from a better view. We decided it was a better decision to split up the vans completely so we could go our seperate ways. We headed to the overlook and hiked up to take some pictures and then we headed to the Fountain Paint Pots. We got to see the paint pots and then we headed down the fountain geysers and the others near it and we arrived at the perfect time because all three in the main area were erupting at once. When we had our fill of watching the geysers we decided to head back to the hotel. On the way back we saw a rainbow. We arrived at the hotel pretty late and then split apart for dinner. It was a good last day.
