Yesterday we arrived in Gardiner, MT around 7 pm after spending the day driving from Valley City, ND. Today we set off into the park at 7 am, starting the day off talking about the history and the wildlife of the park. We stopped to see some bison on our way to our first hike. Our first hike was to crystal creek and on the way we found bison scat and a leg bone of a large animal. At the creek we found beaver dams and a few lodges. Past the creek we found the remains of a bison carcass. Virginia, our guide, estimated that it was around 3 years old and a male. Near the remains we found coyote scat. Then we continued on towards an aspen grove. At the grove we paused to talk about climate change. On the way back to the bus we found wolf and pronghorn tracks. We then took the bus to a picnic place and ate our lunch with a couple of ravens joining the party. One of them was brave enough to sit with us up on the bench while we ate to beg for food. Side note, no one fed them. After lunch we went to help our guide out with a pika survey and on the hike out we passed by the Undine waterfall. We didn’t see any pika moving about but we found scat and helped to document the surroundings and the location. After the pika we drove back to Gardiner to the Yellowstone Forever for a presentation on climate change by David Thoma. This concludes our first day of adventure in Yellowstone.
