To start our wolf day we left our hotel at 6 am. It was still dark when we entered the park. We stopped at Tower Roosevelt for a bathroom break in the dark. Then we headed to the Lamar pack’s rendezvous spot. We watched the sunrise while listening for howling. Just as it was getting bright enough to see to the tree line our guide, Virgina, spotted a grizzly bear with her scope. We soon all had our scopes aimed at him trying to get a good view as he meandered through the valley in and out of the trees. We watched him for about an hour and unfortunately we didn’t see the pack there. We then went to look for moose. On the way scanning through the willows, we found a bison herd and we thought we saw one with a collar so we turned around and looked for a place to park so we could do another herd demographic survey. We also prepared to get a scat sample because we thought there was a collared bison in the herd. It turned out that either we saw wrong or in the time of us turning around and driving back it had wondered behind the hill they were on. After finishing the survey we went to check another spot for wolves. Virginia got a report on her radio as we were leaving the place we had looked for them at. She figured out where they were and we went to go and see them. When we got there we were told that they were bedded down and that if you could find them you would have to be lucky to see them raise their heads. We got to glance through some scopes that people had already set up on their location. Then we headed to our hike of the day, which was heading up to the acclimation pen. We ate lunch in the acclimation pen while learning about the history of the pens. We hiked back down after taking some group pictures. We then drove back to Gardiner for our speaker. Our speaker from the wolf project was Kira Cassidy. She talked with us about the history and the current projects they are working on. After a quick break a bunch of us drove out to the boiling river to experience soaking in the hot parts of the river. It was an interesting half an hour of shocking temperature changes. After that we went back to the hotel for the night. That was the end of our third day in Yellowstone.
